Holiday Song Tag

Macoosh tagged me with this Christmas song meme. Since it’s in the Christmas spirit, here goes:

1. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas by Lou Rawls. Classic, just classic.

2. Christmastime is Here by the Charlie Brown Kids (aka Vince Guaraldi). Always gets me in the holiday spirit, just like the tv special.

3. Jingle Bells by Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters. My favorite version of this song. It’s the same version that’s played on the radio during the Christmas morning scene in the movie “A Christmas Story.”

4. Santa Claus is Coming to Town by Bruce Springsteen. One of the most fun holiday songs I can think of.

5. When My Heart Finds Christmas by Harry Connick, Jr. Can I just say that I love this man’s music? His holiday songs are instant classics and easily fit in with the rest of my holiday collection.

I must add, of course I love all the traditional Christmas hymns that we sing in church, from O Come O Come Emmanuel (usually sung on the first Sunday of Advent) to Silent Night, which closes our Christmas Eve candlelight service. There’s nothing like celebrating the birth of Christ to really get me in the mood. After all, Jesus is the reason for the season.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to upload my entire holiday CD collection to iTunes. And I don’t really feel like tagging anyone right now. It took me over an hour to compose this post because I had to drag out all my holiday music.

Random Song Lyrics Floating Through My Head

Just bear with me, this tends to happen when I let my thinking take over. Ten points to anyone who can name every song.

What a challenge, honesty
What a struggle to learn to speak
Who’d have thought that pretending was easier

Someday we might learn to tell the truth
We might even find the fountains of our youth

And, oh, I feel I am wandering
A fleeting transient

My head is battling with my heart
My logic has been torn apart

Sleeping on an unmade bed
Finding out wherever there is comfort there is pain
Only one step away

You take the wheel for now
I’m too tired to drive this one home anyhow,
For now

Life’s so hard
But I’m doing what I can to not to be getting down

I can’t find a way to stay
And I can’t see my way to go
But I can’t give up without a fight

So that was just a little bit that’s been in my head. You know how it is when just a few lines of a tune are in your head, over and over again? That’s the way it is now.

Gah. Enough music. Time for bed.

Top Five Songs I Want Played At My Funeral

Thanks a lot, Macoosh. This one’s hard, I’ve never really thought about it before. But, I guess I’ll give it a shot.

In no particular order:

1. Flying Home (Brenda’s Song) by Chantal Kreviazuk: “But if you’ve seen the love that’s in her eyes, then everything is good, and if you know the way she felt inside, she’s flying where she should. I never believed we’d ever live to see an angel being born and flying home.” I cry every time I hear this song.

2. Don’t Dream It’s Over by Crowded House. Looks like I’m going for a theme of the whole “don’t cry for me because I’m not gone, but in a better place and still with all of you in your hearts.”

3. The Hymn of Ordinary Motion by Douglas, Barenburg & Meyer. It’s a guitar instrumental, and it’s just beautiful. Look it up on iTunes. It’s got the feel of things just moving on and on, and sounds a bit hopeful.

4. Going Home by Sophie Zelmani. Another song that sounds more hopeful than sad. And there’s some truth in it – I would be going home, because if I’ve died then God has called me home.

5. Too Soon by Eastmountainsouth. It’s always too soon when someone leaves this earth, even if they live to be 100.

Ok, that wasn’t as hard as I thought once I cruised through my iTunes library. Now, who to tag with this one? Courtney, AJ, Gouda, Penny and um, let’s see – Megan, because she has a habit of titling her posts after songs.

I also made up some liner notes to explain why I put the songs I did on there, mainly to avoid the “what the hell was she thinking” syndrome, and in that I listed any songs that were runner-up in that category. Besides the friendship and having fun thing, one of the points of this project is to introduce us to new music, so I thought the runner-up part was appropriate. No word yet on whether she liked it or not, but the again I haven’t read the boards in a couple days. And I’m still waiting for my CD, but Shortcake has also been on vacation (it’s that time of year) and she mentioned she’s hunting down a particular song, so when I get it I’ll post it on here for you.

Getting Through With Some Music

Today was a better day than yesterday. I don’t have days that bad too often, thank goodness. I’m tired, but physically now. Tomorrow’s Friday then I can sleep in on Saturday, do the 10 million things I know I’ll have to do and start a busy half week before I leave on vacation. But that’s ok.

Work was ok, I actually set up a meeting without losing my composure and left a few messages sounding totally professional like I do the same things that everyone else in the office does, even though I’m the admin. Sometimes I really hate being so good at everything I do, because then people expect more out of me. Just because I’m good at something doesn’t mean I like it. And the stuff we do at work involves a lot of phone time and quite a few cold calls and warm calls. Sales, basically. When I try to do that myself I really feel like I’m gonna hurl.

For spending, well, I spent $7 on lunch today, mostly because I’m an idiot and a follower and Time-Flying Dudette and Pretty Lady Dammit were both going to FruitBug Neighborhood Restaurant, so I had to get something too. Just an appetizer (plus tax and tip). I also ate my salad so it wasn’t a total waste. I washed it all down with some Double-Stuf Oreos.

I also spent $4.38 at War-Mart because the lack of sleep is really getting to me and I was out of the things that make that kind of headache go away: tylenol and caffeine. I bought store brand drugs and had a 2-for-1 bottle cap coupon for the 20oz bottles of soda, and I was happy because they had my diet cherry flavor today. I drank one today and saved the other for tomorrow, when I know I will definitely need it.

I’ve also got a little project to do. This one is fun. Every once in awhile (ok, quite often, actually), Digsters like to get together to do random exchanges. The CD exchange is the most popular, we’ve had at least half-dozen of those now but this is the first time I’ve decided to jump in and participate. At first I didn’t because, well, I had no way to make a mix cd (no burner). The last few times I don’t know why, but now I’m doing it, and I’m having fun already. We’ve got a scavenger list of the kinds of songs we need to put on it, so that makes it even more fun. The list is this:

1. A song from the last record you bought
2. A blues song: not necessarily a blues record but a song that is labelled (something) blues
3. A song that gets you going in the morning
4. A song that you think is romantic
5. A song from one of the earliest records you can remember listening to
6. A song that you discovered from a film
7. A song from your favorite band/artist
8. A song from an artist/band that you normally don’t like
9. A Lullaby
10. A song that makes you laugh/you find funny
11. A really good cover version
12. A song that reminds you of school days
13. A song from an artist that you are embarrased to admit you like
14. Whatever it is, it’s got to be funky
15. A song for those quite rainy days
16. A song that no matter when you hear it, it makes you “Feelgood”
17. A song with the word “Look” in the title
18. A song from a member of the “Dead Rockers Society”
19. Your favorite Elvis song
20. Wildcard – just put any song you like on!

So, I’ve been paired with Shortcake for this, and we did pm each other with a few major no-no’s. For me that would be techno, (c)rap, and anything by the Black Eyed Peas. They make my ears bleed. What we receive on these cd’s is a complete surprise, and I’m hoping to be introduced to even more music that I must purchase. As if Radio Paradise hasn’t been helpful enough in that department. Anyhoo, I do have quite a few ideas in mind for this cd, but if anyone has any other ideas, I’m open to suggestions. However, I will not post the final track listing until I know that Shortcake as received her CD. I know she knows how to find my blog, so I don’t want to ruin it for her.

I promised myself I wouldn’t blog tonite, because this is a major contributing factor into my oversleeping. But I did it anyway. *sigh* I gotta do it sometime, because I really shouldn’t be blogging from work, so I guess staying up late to do it is the only way to get it done. Oh well. Time to get to bed.
