We are spending another night in Rawlins, WY. For the last hour or so of our drive yesterday, the road was pretty icy, making for treacherous driving. I was especially nervous, since I’m driving Mister’s pickup – a rear-wheel drive truck, which is not something I have experience with when the roads are less than ideal. We made it to Rawlins last night and checked into a hotel.
This morning, when we tried to check out, the front desk clerk asked us which way we were heading. He has the website for Wyoming road info up on his computer, and it turns out that I-80 was closed to Cheyenne. If we could make it it Cheyenne, we’d be fine because the road is pretty straight and flat from there. But instead we are spending another night in Rawlins.
We all have a bit of cabin fever since we’re stuck here, but for me, this is a bit of a good thing. I’ve had a lot of anxiety about this trip. Between losing Greta and the icy roads, my nerves are shot. Having an extra day to relax has gotten my appetite back to normal, given me a chance to rest (I took a wonderful nap today), and when the road opens I’ll be ready to go and hopefully not as nervous about it.
Greta’s been handling the trip like a champ. The pickup is her home, since it’s the only thing that smells familiar to her anymore. She’s been pretty good in the hotels, and even though she’s not keen on the brutal icy wind here in Wyoming, she’s been great with the snow. It’s just another thing to smell and check out as far as she’s concerned.
And for those of you who are asking why we didn’t take the southern route, there was some wild weather along I-40 today, with high winds and a dust storm, so we probably would have been screwed either way. I’m just glad that there’s a restaurant at this hotel.
