Got Music?

I’m in the process of updating the music on my iPod. I listen to it at work, because when you work in finance the silence can be deafening, and it’s better than a radio because I can listen to stuff that’s not exactly appropriate for work and no one is the wiser.

With the holidays fast approaching, I wanted to put some Christmas music on my iPod and take off the Halloween music. I started by going through my Holiday playlist and adding the songs I wanted to my list.

(For those who are wondering, I have a playlist in iTunes called “Upload this list” and I have it set to automatically sync to that list only, which makes it easy to manage what I’m listening to at work. Then I just put the iPod on shuffle for some mindless listening.)

I ended up with a playlist that was over the memory size of my iPod, so I needed to weed some things out. Shouldn’t be too big a deal, because I have a habit of downloading free stuff. Amazon.com has a huge selection of free MP3′s (check back often for new stuff!), and if you Like iTunes on Facebook, once in awhile they will have codes for free sampler albums. I download most of this stuff without giving it a second thought, because it’s free and legal and the RIAA won’t come after me for it. Anyway, once I download new stuff, I add it to my playlist to check it out.

Problem is, when I’m at work and I come across a song that doesn’t really do it for me, I don’t have time to write it down so that I can easily remove it from my playlist. Instead I wait until 11pm when I’m furiously trying to update my playlist by sampling every single song and deciding what goes and what stays.

I forgot to update this during the 4 day holiday weekend, so I had to listen to the voices in my head all day yesterday at work. Since it’s very late on Monday night as I’m writing this, Tuesday will be much of the same. By bedtime (or way past bedtime, since I tend to stay up way too late) I wasn’t even through the C’s. I guess I know what I’m doing after work today if I want to listen to music at work ever again.

Do you listen to music at work? What do you listen to?

The Most Perfect Junk Food Ever

Since this is the time of year for overindulging in the not-so-healthy foods that we all love, I thought I’d do a post on my favorite junk food. It’s not something that you can buy in the stores, and it’s not particularly cheap to make since it’s not a flour based cake or cookie. No, it’s better than that.

I am talking about Magic Cookie Bars, or as they are known in my family, Squares.

There are many different variations on this classic, but they all involve a graham cracker crust, chocolate chips, nuts of some sort, and sweetened condensed milk. That’s a lot of sweet packed into one pan!

My mom has been making these for as long as I can remember, and they never last too long – not when everyone in the house is sneaking one here and there. My mom makes them a little different from the recipe I linked to. Instead of 2 cups of chocolate chips, she does 1 cup chocolate and 1 cup butterscotch chips, which turns them into 7-layer cookie bars. And one thing I’m insistent on – the condensed milk goes on top of the graham cracker crust, not on top of everything else. I’ve had them with the condensed milk on top, and they’ve been a bit too chewy for my liking. No, the proper order is this:

  • butter
  • graham cracker crumbs
  • sweetened condensed milk
  • chocolate chips
  • butterscotch chips
  • walnuts
  • coconut

I made a pan of squares this past weekend. I think they were gone by Tuesday, now that I got Mister addicted to them (he’s not the only one to blame, though – I could live off these things). If I never ate another piece of junk food again, I’d be happy so long as I had squares. They are the perfect combination of every sweet thing you could ever want, all in one bite. And now you must all go make them so you’ll stop drooling on your keyboards.

Oh, and I’m sorry I don’t have photos. Squares are camera shy and hid in my belly.

I’ve Been Creating

That’s right, you heard me. I’ve been making jewelry, like I mentioned when I said I was getting crafty again. This is one hobby that just seems to keep going and going and going. I’m getting a better understanding of what’s what as I continue, and I even picked up a couple copies of Bead Style Magazine since my local bead store has back copies in stock.

So far, I’ve made some earrings that will be holiday gifts (no pics of those yet, sorry!) and stuff for myself to fill in some gaps in my own jewelry collection. Since a whole new world of options has been opened to me, I’m able to indulge in my desire to have a pair of earrings to match every shirt I own, along with a few extra pairs for variety.

Here’s what I’ve been making (and you can click to embiggen any photo):

Purple Teardrop Baubles

I’ve been wanting a pair of earrings to match a dusty purple t-shirt I own, and I found some purple crystals at the bead store the other day. Then I went to another bead store, where I found these awesome glass beads that match my shirt perfectly, since the crystals were a bit too violet to go with the shirt.

I used the glass beads, which are Venetian glass with a silver foil lining, clear seed beads that have a silvery shimmer to them, and silver teardrop shapes that I cut from a length of chain. The beaded dangling bits look uneven because, well, they are. I’m still having trouble with consistency, and the simple loops I created to hang them aren’t the same size. Also, they look like they’re leaning because these beads have a larger hole, so the headpins don’t hold them as securely as they do smaller beads.

Tiny Black Clusters

I have lots of neutrals – silver, gold, diamonds, pearls – and I have earrings that have grey beads and some that have a dark silvery gunmetal finish, but nothing that’s pure black. I used 8mm black onyx beads and black crystal bicones to form the cluster above the onyx. I love these small, simple earrings and have worn them a couple of times already.

Blue Circles

I have a pair of earrings that are gold with a blue enameled center, that I bought in London at Accessorize years ago when I did wear a lot of gold and was looking for something blue that was not made with silver. My how times have changed! These lapis discs with clear seed beads and hammered circles create a very lightweight pair of earrings that goes very well with denim.

Red Teardrops

I found these twist-cut red glass beads and fell in love. The unusual cut and the deep red color did it for me. Then I got them home and thought, crap, now what do I do with them? I finally came up with this – a cluster of red beads inside a teardrop (can you tell I’m in love with the teardrop shape?). I made up one, but it looked like it needed something else, and Mister came up with the idea of adding the bead between the drop and the ear wire, and now I have a lovely pair of red earrings.

I’ve also got a few other pairs that I made, but I don’t have pictures of them yet so you’ll just have to wait.

In my latest jewelry adventures, I’ve been surfing Etsy multiple times a day, and I’ve made a few observations:

1. Cluster earrings are very popular. They’re tedious to make, and I prefer a simpler cluster like the ones I made to a more ostentatious one, but they are everywhere.

2. A lot of earring designs look the same after awhile. There’s either no imagination or only so many ways you can string a bead and attach it to your ear.

3. I have been looking at earrings in the stores and online that I like, and instead of wanting them, I now think, “I can totally make that!”

I’ve also been seeing a few designs come up over and over again, but I haven’t been able to source the materials. Does anyone know where I can find leaf charms/pendants like this? I totally want to make some earrings with them but have been unable to find them anywhere. I figure that since quite a few sellers use the same design, they are buying them somewhere. Also, this little bird is everywhere too. I don’t care for the bird so much, but a source would be great. My guess is that I’ll hit a treasure trove of wonderful things to make jewelry with if I can find out where to get those things.

And the big question – am I making jewelry for myself, holiday gift giving, or more?

Yes. All of the above.

I started by making stuff for myself. I figured that would be the best way to see if I actually liked doing this. As I realized that I did in fact like it, I decided to make some stuff to give as Christmas gifts. And more? Well, I’ve been thinking about that. There’s only so many pairs of earrings that a girl can reasonably have in her own collection, right? (Don’t answer that.) I do have some stuff made up that I don’t plan on wearing or giving away, so I’ve been thinking about opening an Etsy shop. It would definitely be after the holidays, because I don’t want to get caught up in the holiday rush, plus I’d need to make up some more stock so I don’t open with only a few pieces.

Also, right now I’m only making earrings. They’re quick, use minimal materials, and honestly, it’s what I’m most interested in wearing myself. I don’t wear bracelets due to my tiny wrists (most of them are too big) and I don’t wear necklaces because I have a simple one that I wear every day. Earrings is where it’s at for me. I could have a shop with just earrings, but as my skills expand, I’d like to offer other items. I just need to get over the “I’ll only make what I personally would wear” mindset and expand not only the products I offer but the styles as well.

So what do you think? Do you think I have it in me to have a halfway decent Etsy shop? What styles of jewelry do you like, and what would you like to see?

Locked Out

This past weekend (when we weren’t being lazy), Mister and I bought a doggie door for Greta so she can let herself out at will. It’s the kind that installs into an existing sliding door, and Mister put it in since he’s better at that sort of thing than I am.

Instead of installing the latch, Mister made a new hole for the security latch at the bottom of the door. I didn’t even know we had it, but now that I did, it was giving me trouble. Mister showed me how it worked, but it just didn’t like me. First, I couldn’t get it unlocked. Then I couldn’t lock it back up. It’s no secret that simple mechanical devices don’t like me, but I should have mastered this.

Monday morning, after I got ready for work I went to take Greta out one last time before leaving for the day. While she likes her doggie door (so long as the flap isn’t down – she’s still afraid of the flap), she still much prefers me to go out with her. I went out the human door, closed it, and encouraged Greta to do her thing. She sniffed a few rocks and went back into the house through her door. I tried to follow.

When I tried to open the slider to get back in the house, it didn’t move. At first I thought that the weatherstripping fell down again, but I should have been able to push that out of the way to open the door. This wasn’t weatherstripping. This was very stuck at the bottom. It was the security latch. Somehow it had locked itself after I went out the door.

So there I was, ready to go to work, locked out of the house. The garage door was closed, the front door and slider were locked, as were all the windows. Mister was upstairs sleeping, and my car keys and phone were on the counter, way out of reach since my arms aren’t 12 feet long.

I stuck my head through the doggie door, but since Greta isn’t a huge dog, there was no way I was going to fit through it. I called for Greta, who came over, licked my face, pointed and laughed, and walked away. I stood up again, trying to figure out what to do.

I decided to go to the front door and ring the doorbell. I figured if I rang it enough times, Mister would hear it, get pissed off, and answer the door in a huff. I started ringing the doorbell with an incessant determination. I also found out that my dog doesn’t make a fuss when the doorbell rings. Figures. The one time ever I want her to bark like a maniac, and she goes back upstairs to go to sleep.

Twenty minutes of doorbell ringing and pounding on the door failed to wake Mister, so I gave up on that. I thought about throwing rocks at the bedroom window, but I figured that with my aim, I’d either miss the house entirely or break a neighbor’s window, so I nixed that idea. I started wondering if I could figure out enough about the electrical systems to go to the main wiring into the house and set off the fire alarm, since that would be sure to wake Mister, but since I spent half my childhood being very afraid of the simple act of plugging and unplugging things, I wasn’t going to master this task in a reasonable amount of time.

I turned to simpler solutions. I stuck my head in the doggie door and started calling for help. I yelled as loud as I could, calling Mister’s name and yelling that I needed help, but again, he didn’t wake up. By this time I was late for work, and my husband was happily snoring away, probably having lovely dreams about doorbells.

Finally, I remembered something – the whole doggie door panel. It was spring loaded. It wasn’t screwed in. It should work – it had to work. I wedged the slider open as far as I could to get a bit of room on the top for my fingers, and was able to get the doggie door out and squeeze my fat ass into the house. I leaned the doggie door against the wall, closed the slider all the way, and went upstairs.

Greta was excited that I was home – she always gets excited when I come back home, no matter how long I’ve been gone. I went into the bedroom, and Greta enthusiastically followed and jumped on the bed. I walked around to Mister’s side of the bed, and Greta jumped on the big lump to get closer to me. That’s what finally woke him up – a 14lb dog jumping on him.

I told him my saga, and told him that he can put the doggie door back in. Since there was a security flaw with the previous installation, he put it in more securely this time. He pointed and laughed at me, then kissed me and sent me on my way to work, 45 minutes late. Yep, I was outside for about 40 minutes trying to get back into my house.

The stupid latch still hates me, but now I just don’t close the door all the way when I’m outside. I don’t want to go through that again.

Encyclopedia of Me – T is for Tattoo

I have a tattoo. It usually surprises most people to find that out.

It’s a couple of dolphins on my right ankle, and the artwork was taken from a larger sea life scene.

I had wanted one for a long time, but the first time I went to get one, I chickened out. I guess I wasn’t ready then.

After I moved to Vegas, I got a call from one of my friends back home, who has a ton of tattoos herself. She told me that she saw one of the girls from my old neighborhood, and her brother – the guy I grew up next door to – was opening a tattoo shop here in Vegas. So one day I decided to go in and say hi.

Keith and I sat around catching up on old times and chatting. After I’d been there for awhile, he asked when I was going to get inked. I had been looking at his portfolio and the artwork samples and said that I had been thinking about a dolphin (I was collecting dolphin figurines at the time) but I didn’t want the typical, cartoonish looking one with a black outline. He pulled up some more artwork online and we found a sea life scene that had two dolphins together and decided to go for that. I got in the chair and Keith fired up the machinery.

I was afraid that it would hurt, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. It was more like rugburn, especially the next day. The only part that hurt was on the tail fins, since that got a bit too close for comfort to the tendon on the back of my ankle, but otherwise, the expectation of pain was worse than the pain itself.

I’d like another tattoo – this one on my shoulder. I’m looking at a Gemini piece, because I’m a Gemini, but I don’t want the astrological symbol. Instead, I want to be a little less obvious and get a tattoo of the constellation.

Since I did all this talking about my ink, I’m sure you want to see a picture of it. Well, here you go:
