Weighty Matters, Take 2

Published by Kirsten under My Health

About a year and a half ago, I wrote about how I was joining the WW cult because it’s offered at my work at a discount. I did great at first, lost some steam as things went on, then had to quit going to meetings because a project I was working on went live and sucked ALL my time. Well, things are a little steadier these days, and it’s being offered again, so I’m going to try again.

I’m still struggling with the extra weight, but I have made a few changes. I now drink almost no soda - diet or otherwise. I’m too cheap to buy it at home, and cost reductions at work mean it’s not free anymore. I’m on all water, with the occasional single-serve Crystal Light for some flavor, and if I really need a caffeine fix I have to drag my butt down to the cafeteria to hit up the vending machines. Also, I am so much more familiar with my comfort zone. I rarely overeat any more. I still have a ways to go in cutting out the sweets at work. I seem to go nuts at work with sugary snacks, but I still have Christmas candy on my desk at home. Go figure. I also need to make more of an effort to exercise more. We have a treadmill in the living room, and it faces the tv, but I rarely use it because I can come up with a whole bunch of excuses for that.

I’m getting tired of not having much of a wardrobe. I’m not a total clothes horse by any means, but at this size, I hate shopping. Nothing looks good, and I barely have enough clothing to make it 10 days. I do have a whole closet full of clothes that I love and actually look good on a slimmed-down me. I kept them because I really like them, I am determined to fit in them again, and because clothes are expensive. At least I won’t have to run out to buy new pants when the current ones fail to stay up.

I’m also tired of not having much energy. I am so much more out of shape than I was when I was out of shape 20lbs ago. I have a desk job, which doesn’t help, but I get winded climbing the stairs. I don’t like that feeling, so something needs to be done about that.

On the good side, like I said before I am very familiar with my comfort zone, so overeating is not usually an issue. Also, I am nearly 10lbs lighter than I was when I first weighed in at WW in January 2008, and most of that weight loss has been in the last 6-8 months. My weight no longer starts with a 2! That’s a good thing, and I hope to keep it going and get down to my ideal weight sometime before I turn 80.

Now please excuse me while I *ahem* try to convince my husband that he is going to do this diet too. Right now he keeps whispering sweet nothings in my ear and it sounds a lot like “Cold Stone.”

Hooray for you! I can definitely identify with wanting to fit into clothing. I too have a closetful that stare at me longingly.

I wish I had the decipline you do to follow WW. I have been “mindful” of what I am consuming these days. I too, have a million and one excuses not to exercise, but I’m slowly eliminating them.

Umm…Coldstone?….Weeeelllllll it is very hot out and all.

Well, putting it on my work calendar will actually help me go to the meetings, and they aren’t being held on my busy days, so I should have no excuse not to go. Following the plan takes a bit more discipline, but I’m leaning towards the core plan this time so I don’t have to screw around with recording points. Majorly need to work on the exercise part though. I know from past experience that exercise is the key for me, and that if I am active then I don’t need to worry so much about what I eat.

I didn’t end up getting Cold Stone last night. I am in a good mood and don’t have PMS, therefore have no need for it. I did manage to scrounge up some chocolate for Mister, and I had a glass of lactose-free skim chocolate milk. That usually does the job for my cravings. Except at work.

So my weight isn’t that far up there, it still bothers me. My main problem is that I’m on a medication that makes you gain weight. Good news is I’ve actually lost a few winter pounds due in part to the enormous amounts of walking around in Sweden (they have walking trails, even paved ones, everywhere, especially around apartment complexes. Here in nowhere NH you have to be really careful not to get run over by some redneck in his pick up, hurriedly on his way to the VFW for beers.
We have a treadmill in the basement and now that warmer weather might be looming ahead, I just might take the time for a casual walk while my spouse is away on business and the kids are in school. If I could lose most of my tummy, I’d be happy. Next up will be a facelift…………

Remember the Swedish lifestyle! Even Uncle Caboose walks up and down his street, which also has crazy drivers and no sidewalks. I gained weight on meds as well, and stopped gaining as soon as I was off them. And eat fresh food! You have that option in Nowhere NH. You have FAHM STANDS. And bring a boom box or something downstairs so you can listen to hopping music on the treadmill. I’ll even send you a CD to work out to >:-)

Doesn’t matter how long it takes to lose the weight, as long as you are keeping at it!

I know how hard it is to exercise when you have a desk job. Plus, food in North America is not healthy. Sorry to say, but it’s true… eating healthy is a challenge here, no markets, expensive veggies and fruits, cheaper ready-to-eat meals. It takes a lot of efforts to eat and be healthy here…

    Good luck!

Not only is it hard to be healthy in North America, I live in one of the unhealthiest cities in the country! All you can eat buffets are everywhere, and the fresh fruits and veggies we get in Vegas leave much to be desired. As my husband puts it, he used to throw away better looking produce when he lived in California. All I can do is keep trying!

Right… I forgot you lived in Vegas!

Well, I wish you the best of luck. Even if I have always lived in places where fresh food, veggies etc. were quite available (yes, Ottawa is cold but we import from the US), I remember Alice Spring in Australia or Patagonia in Argentina, where I was dying for fresh food and there was… nothing!

We do have produce in the supermarkets, but there’s no such thing as local produce here. It gets shipped from all over the place, but mostly California. That’s not too far away, but friuts and veggies don’t care much for the trip here.
