My latest mix CD exchange is just that – music I loved in High School. I was in high school in the late 80s and early 90s, and quite frankly, a lot of the music from that time is forgettable (as in, when will everyone forget this stuff ever existed). I was a bit embarrassed by my mix, but it turns out that a lot of other people in my group liked it and the memories it brought back for them, so I’m quite happy about that. I related my mix to certain memories, good and bad, that they brought back. Here’s my mix:
- Angel by Aerosmith
- Pour Some Sugar on Me by Def Leppard
- Addicted to Love by Robert Palmer
- You Got It (The Right Stuff) by New Kids on the Block
- Straight Up by Paula Abdul
- Love Shack by The B-52′s
- The Look by Roxette
- What I Am by Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians
- Fade to Black by Metallica
- Thinking of You by Sa-Fire
- Unbelievable by EMF
- Twice as Hard by The Black Crowes
- Dream On by Aerosmith
- Fall At Your Feet by Crowded House
- Wind of Change by Scorpions
- Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton
- Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel
Boyfriend also made a mix, since he went to high school in the early 80s and he listened to cool alternative music (not to be confused with the heavily synthesized New Wave music that you hear on 80s flashback programs. Here’s his mix:
- I Could Be Happy by Altered Images
- Blue Shadows by The Blasters
- Avalon by Roxy Music
- Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division
- Belly of the Whale by Burning Sensations
- Stand or Fall by The Fixx
- Major Tom by Peter Schilling
- Christian Boy by Robert Seidler
- 88 Lines About 44 Women by Nails
- Fade to Grey by Visage
- I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass by Nick Lowe
- Once in a Lifetime by Talking Heads
- Warm Leatherette by The Normal
- People Who Died by Jim Carroll Band
- The Card Cheat by The Clash
- A Rush and a Push & The Land Is Ours by The Smiths
- California Kid by Beat Farmers
- The Fanatic by Felony
- My Wife and My Dead Wife by Robyn Hitchcock
- The Unguarded Moment by The Church
I think I’m going to enjoy Boyfriend’s mix a lot more than my own, since I rarely listen to anything on there anymore (except Crowded House – they’re in my current playlist). What did you listen to in high school? Don’t worry about revealing your age, either!

Ahhhh the memories….do ya ever miss the white Tempo:)
Oh yes, the 1985 Ford Tempo that outlived high school by exactly 2 days. Nope, don’t miss it a bit, but we sure had a lot of fun going anywhere and everywhere we could get away with!
I like most of your selections (New kids on the block?? No thanks!). I sometimes listen to the Big 80′s channel on satellite radio. The Hair Band channel is good too.
Yeah, I did have a lapse in judgment there with the New Kids. I was 15 and got caught up in the mayhem. It’s probably why I have such a huge disdain for boy bands these days.
Kirsten – that NKOTB song is a classic.. ;) not a lapse in judgment! hehe I loved NKOTB too.. Donnie in particular.
Boy bands were most interesting because all my friends usually had different favourites in the band. I had my real obsession with a band when I was a little older – and therefore financially able to spend a bit of money on it. And I did spend a *lot* of money on it.. I must scan those pics of my bedroom in one day..
Cheers,
Snos
That’s the way it was with my friends! Jordan was my favorite, and Joey was the favorite of 2 of my friends. I spent way too much money on it, thanks to that ice cream shop job I had at the start of the obsession.
I have a pic somewhere of my bedroom, which was wallpapered in NKOTB pictures from the magazines. I doubt I’ll be posting it though.
Pour Some Sugar on Me rocks. The lyrics make absolutely no sense whatsoever, but it still rocks.
I listened to a lot of Huey Lewis in high school.
I actually still listen to some Def Leppard. I had no idea at the time how … grown up they lyrics to Pour Some Sugar on Me were, I just liked it because I’m a sweets freak.
